The fact that the person in question was one of the National Hockey League's newest multimillionaires, New York Rangers forward Scott Gomez, is.
Gomez, who six weeks ago signed a seven-year, $51.5-million free-agent contract, has been a regular along with his former teammate, 10-year NHL veteran Jay Pandolfo of the New Jersey Devils, at the new Micro Ice Training Center rink on Flagship Drive.
A rink on Flagship Drive?
Where's the massive facility? Where's the 500-car parking lot? And where's the jumbo Zamboni?
There is none of the above, this rink is 30 feet by 20 feet as compared to a 200 by 85 NHL ice surface. That's where the "micro" comes in on "Micro Ice."
The former teammates - Gomez played seven years with Pandolfo on the Devils before signing with the Rangers last month - are also partners in this concept, which includes a strength and conditioning area, hosted by "Body by Boyle."
"It's pretty basic," said Dick Pandolfo of North Andover, Jay's uncle and principal owner of the smaller rink, which he hopes to eventually franchise.
"People see the size of the rink and think it's crazy," said Dick. "We believe this is the future of hockey, at least in terms of teaching skills. These are more prevalent in Canada, especially around Toronto. It's the one thing we are missing in hockey, at every level, but especially at the youth level. This is all about skills."
Gomez was one of those doubters until he spent one hour of playing two-on-two (with one goalie).
NHL star Scott Gomez skate around a cone before attempting a shot on goal while practicing at Micro Ice in North Andover. "It sounded crazy when I first heard about this," said Gomez, a native of Anchorage, Alaska. "And I said the same thing when I first looked at the size of the ice. Now? This is really what hockey is all about, playing in tight spaces and making quick decisions. Everything is fast here. After one hour, you are dead."
Jay Pandolfo said the difference between a practice on a regular sheet of ice and here is like night and day.
"Even when we practice in New Jersey, a lot of the time, after conditioning, is spent on systems," said Jay, who is entering the last year of his contract with the Devils. "Trust me, even the pros can use some extra skills work. The game is about skills and winning the little battles."
Proof of that was yesterday, when Gomez and Jay Pandolfo were among five skaters and one goalie who ran some drills before closing with a two-on-two (one player played defense). It was non-stop action.
Dick said six players, at any age, is usually the maximum for clinics, learn-to-skate programs or simple skills workouts, which are all offered at Micro Ice.
"In basketball, you can work on your skills by shooting hundreds of shots or dribbling," he said. "In baseball, you can catch hundreds of grounders or go to the batting cage and hit hundreds of baseballs. There really isn't a place for hockey skills, for an extended period."
Dick Pandolfo says a few professional organizations have checked out his facility, including the New Jersey Devils, with the thought of maybe adding the smaller rinks to their practice facilities.
Local hockey clubs, public and private, have begun renting the ice on an hourly basis.
"We had a coach in here with six 6-year-old kids the other day," said Dick Pandolfo. "It was great. The best part was when he finished the drills and stepped out and just watched them play on their own."
The facility, which opened in June, has a waiting area with a huge flat screen TV. There is also a seating area for parents or family members who want to watch the workouts.
Pandolfo's staff includes Paul Vincent, founder of Dynamic Skating; John McLean, President of Dynamic Skating; Mike Boyle, cofounder of Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning; Joe Bertagna, Hockey East Director and goalie coach; Mike Geragosian, Boston University goalie coach; and Erika Hammar, skating instructor.
